Hyundai Hope on Wheels

Helping Kids Fight Cancer

No one ever wants to hear the word “Cancer” from their doctor; especially not any parent; but even more heart wrenching is when they hear that their child has cancer.  And it may be shocking to hear that less than 4% of federal research funding goes towards childhood cancer.  That is why Hyundai decided to step in to help fill that gap.

The initiative was started in 1998 by Hyundai and a group of New-England area dealers that decided to support the fight against pediatric cancer by helping the Jimmy Fund at the Dana-Garber Cancer Institute.  This support then grew to become what is now known as Hope on Wheels.  Hyundai Hope on Wheels is a program designed to transform the lives of children battling cancer across the country with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.  They provide both funding for the cause and hope for the children still fighting the battle.

There are two grant programs that Hyundai Hope on Wheels contributes to: the Hyundai Clinical Grant program and the Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant.  The Hyundai Clinical Grant was established in 2006 and consists of members traveling the nation to donate funds and raise awareness for the cause.  During every grant presentation the signature activity called the “Handprint Ceremony” takes place.  This is when each child gets to leave their handprint on a Hyundai car that then travels the country to spread awareness for the program.  The use of handprints as their symbol of hope came from the notion that there is nothing more personal than a handprint because each is distinctive in their own way, much like the battle these children face and the milestones they achieve.  One child’s handprint for over-coming their obstacle can help give the next child hope for the fight they are currently facing.

The second grant program called Hyundai Scholar Hope Grant was created in 2010 as an expansion to recognize National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month (which is in September).  This grant program awards $250,000 over two years to the nation’s best and brightest institutions that are leading the way in pediatric cancer research.  Many of the projects this grant has funded have led to the discovery of new treatments for children.

The newest development: in a bold move to accelerate the scientific study of pediatric cancer on April 6, 2014 Hyundai Motor America and Hyundai Hope on Wheels awarded a $2 million grant to the Children’s Oncology Group to support their latest endeavor Project:EveryChild.  Project:Everychild partners with families of children with cancer to discover the cause all childhood cancers.
