Get Ready for the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon

Not every car is worth the hype surrounding it, but the hullabaloo for the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is well deserved. Not only does this beast redefine the meaning of the word “fast,” but also takes innovation to a new level with the brand new tech under the hood that makes this dragster street legal. With only 3,000 slated for production and a price tag starting at $86K, it’s going to be tough to get your hands on one but let’s delve into the details anyway and revel in good ole American ingenuity.

The standard Demon starts with a Supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI® V8 engine that cranks out 808 horsepower and is armed with a functional Air-Grabber™ hood scoop and Torque Reserve Launch System for extra oomph off the line. For just a dollar more, you can upgrade to include The Demon Crate with your purchase which unlocks the car’s full potential of 840 horsepower and 770 lb-ft of torque. The Crate comes with the extra performance hardware and software necessary to run high-octane race gas, includes a pair of narrow front drag wheels, a conical performance air filter, two valve stems, and so much more. It even comes with Demon-branded tools like a hydraulic floor jack with matching bag, cordless impact wrench with charger, a torque wrench with extension and lugnut socket, and more. You don’t need The Crate, but it’s a must have for collectors – and for a dollar, why not?

As for all that new tech, the Demon hosts a few firsts for mass production cars. It is the first production car to have a transbrake, which locks the transmission in gear so drag racers don’t have to cramp their foot holding down the brakes to avoid creeping through the lights when pushing the RPMs at the starting line. And when it’s time to blast off, just pull the steering wheel paddles to launch. The Demon also boasts the honor as the first production car with a novel liquid-to-air intercooler chiller system that diverts cold air from the air-conditioner loop, as well as an After-Run Chiller that cools the supercharger after the engine is turned off. The engineers went through the Demon vehicle piece-by-piece and to reevaluate and improve upon every inch of it and in the process replaced more than 50 percent of the standard internals. If that’s not progress with a purpose, then we don’t know what is.

Plus, it can actually pop a wheelie. Yes, The Demon is the first street-legal production vehicle that can lift its front tires completely off the ground under initial acceleration. Hit the pedal hard on take off and don’t just experience this drag thrill, survive it because thanks to all the improvements made on the Challenger SRT Demon, it also has the privilege to have the fastest acceleration of any production car. It clocks in at 60 mph in 2.3 seconds, 100 mph in 5.1 seconds and passes the quarter-mile marker in 9.65 seconds at a blistering 140 mph. That’s the fastest quarter mile in production.

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a ride that isn’t for the faint of heart, but you can experience many of the same thrills with its predecessors and relatives in the Dodge lineup.
