Ram ProMaster City Vs. Ford Transit Connect: People or Cargo… Your Choice

By Justin Cupler | January 2nd, 2019

Businesses and large families in the Saginaw, Michigan area rely on cargo and passenger vans to meet their specific needs. The era of massive cargo vans is giving way to smaller, nimbler options, and Ram and Ford have two great smaller options in the 2019 Ram ProMaster City and 2019 Ford Transit Connect. But which of these cargo– or people-hauling vans fits your needs best? Keep reading to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Ram ProMaster City and 2019 Ford Transit Connect offer everyday drivers and companies alike affordable vans that are smaller and easier to handle than large cargo vans of yesteryear. There is nothing overly unique about either van, as they both feature simple designs and come as cargo or passenger vans. The only unique feature is the 2019 Transit Connect has two wheelbase lengths.

The 2019 Ram ProMaster City comes in just a single design that measures 187.1 inches long, 84.6 inches wide, and 74.2 inches tall. It rides on a 122.4-inch wheelbase.

The 2019 Ford Transit Connect has a 104.8- and 120.6-inch wheelbase model, giving it a range of sizes. The Transit Connect is 174.2 inches to 190 inches long, 84.1 inches wide, and 71.6 to 72 inches tall.

Advantage: 2019 Ram ProMaster City

  • Longer base body and wheelbase

Advantage: 2019 Ford Transit Connect

  • More traditional looks
  • Two size options

Interior

Inside, neither the 2019 ProMaster City nor the 2019 Ford Transit are overly beautiful. This is especially true in their respective cargo van bodies. Both vans are quite utilitarian, but the ProMaster feels more like a work van with its thick steering wheel, larger buttons and knobs, and simpler infotainment system options.

The 2019 Ford Transit Connect feels a bit more like a traditional sedan or minivan with its four-spoke steering wheel, satin-chrome accents, and additional interior options.

The 2019 ProMaster City and Ford Transit Connect feature cargo and passenger van options, so there are plenty of interior measurements to account for. In the ProMaster City Cargo Van, the font seats have 46 inches of headroom, 40.8 inches of legroom, 59.3 inches of shoulder room, and 52.8 inches of hip room. This gives it a 1.7-inch advantage over the Ford in shoulder room, but it comes up short in headroom by 0.9 inches, legroom by 1.5 inches, and hip room by 1.4 inches.

In its cargo area, the ProMaster Cargo Van can handle cargo that’s 87.2 inches long cargo and 51.8 inches tall, and it can fit 48.4 inches of cargo between its wheel wells. In total, the Ram ProMaster City Cargo Van can haul 131.7 cubic feet of cargo room. The Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van’s cargo area can handle cargo that’s 71.8 to 87.6 long and 49.7 to 49.8 inches tall, and it can fit 48.7 inches of cargo between its wheel wells. All told, the 2019 Ford Transit Connect Cargo Van can tote up 104.8 to 127.4 cubic feet of cargo.

In its passenger-friendly Wagon model, the 2019 Ram ProMaster City can tote up to five passengers in its two rows of seating. Up front, the ProMaster Wagon shares the Cargo Van’s measurements of 46 inches of headroom, 40.8 inches of legroom, 59.3 inches of shoulder room, and 52.8 inches of hip room. These measurements beat the Transit Connect by 1.7 inches in shoulder room, but come up short in legroom by 0.7 inches, headroom by 0.9 inches, and hip room by 1.4 inches

In its second row, the ProMaster City Wagon has 44 inches of headroom, 36.8 inches of legroom, 58 inches of shoulder room, and 59.2 inches of hip room. Compared to the Transit Connect, the ProMaster has 0.9 inches more second-row hip room, but it misses the mark by 2.9 inches in headroom, 0.8 inches in legroom, and 0.5 inches in shoulder room.

The 2019 Ford Transit Connect Wagon sets itself apart with its third row that accommodates an extra pair of passengers. This third row offers 41.9 inches of headroom, 35 inches of legroom, 56.3 inches of shoulder room, and 47 inches of hip room.

Advantage: 2019 Ram ProMaster City

  • Feels more like a utility vehicle
  • More cargo room

Advantage: 2019 Ford Transit Connect

  • More car-like
  • More passenger room

Performance

The 2019 Ram ProMaster City has just one engine option: a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 178 horsepower and 174 pound-feet of torque. This power routes through a nine-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.

The 2019 Ford Transit Connect comes standard with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that cranks out 150 horsepower and 144 pound-feet of torque. This routes through an eight-speed automatic transmission and out to the front wheels.

Unlike the Ram, the Ford has a few engine options, including a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 169 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. There will also soon be an available 1.5-liter turbo-diesel engine, but its specs are not available yet.

Being cargo vans, payload makes a huge difference when buyers choose one of these vans. The 2019 Ram ProMaster checks in with a 1,885-pound payload capacity in its cargo setup and a 1,760-pound capacity in its Wagon body. The Ford Transit Connect can haul just 1,510 and 1,570 pounds in its short and long wheelbase, respectively.

Towing is not a big deal in these smaller vans, but the ProMaster can tug up to 2,000 pounds as a cargo van and 1,914 pounds as a passenger van. The Transit Connect’s towing tops out at 2,000 pounds regardless of it being a cargo or passenger van.

While fuel economy isn’t necessarily the first thing cargo and passenger van shoppers look to, but it can play a role in the decision process. The 2019 Ram ProMaster delivers a respectable 21 mpg city, 28 highway, and 24 combined.

With the 2.0-liter, the 2019 Ford Transit Connect gets up to 24 mpg city, 29 highway, and 26 combined. Moving up to the 2.5-liter engine pushes these ratings down to 20 mpg city, 27 highway, and 22 combined. There are no ratings for the upcoming 1.5-liter diesel engine, but they are sure to top the range by a wide margin.

Advantage: 2019 Ram ProMaster City

  • Big payload advantage
  • More base power

Advantage: 2019 Ford Transit Connect

  • More engine options
  • Better base fuel economy
  • Diesel option coming
