Ram 1500 Vs. Ford F-150

By Justin Cupler | April 22nd, 2019

Pickup trucks have officially made the transition from rugged work vehicles to daily drivers, and two popular models that can handle both ends of the use spectrum are the 2019 Ford F-150 and 2019 Ram 1500. Both offer base trim levels that are inexpensive and hard-working, but they also boast high-end trims that make for great commuter vehicles. Find out which is better for you below.

Exterior

The Ram 1500 went through a full redesign for 2019, bringing in a sharp new look that rids it of the semi-truck-inspired look it’s had for many years. This new look falls more in line with the more family-oriented look the entire segment has moved toward recently.

The 2019 Ford F-150 went through its last redesign in 2015. This new look boasts a bolder front end with a striking grille flanked by C-shaped headlights that appear to grip the grille. While it is not as modern and stylish as the Ram 1500’s look, the F-150’s new design is great for traditional pickup buyers.

The Ram 1500 sets itself apart from the F-150 with its rugged-looking Rebel model that boasts a lifted suspension, a unique black grille, special wheels and tires, and much more. The F-150 comes back to smash the Rebel with its Baja-ready Raptor model, but it comes at a hefty premium.

Interior

Inside, both pickups are rugged-looking with upright instrument panels, large buttons and knobs, and simple base trims, but they also have their more premium sides with their respective Limited trims. They also show off more rugged sides in the F-150 Raptor and Ram 1500 Rebel.

The Ram 1500, however, has more modern available features, including a tablet-sized touchscreen, a rotary shifter knob, and more. The F-150 is plenty luxurious and feature-packed, but it lacks the high ceiling of the Ram 1500.

Performance

Offering a wide range of engine options is just the way trucks work, and the Ram 1500 has one 3.6-liter V-6 engine and two versions of the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 available. The engines range from 305 horsepower to 395 horsepower. The V-6 engine gets an mpg boost from its standard eTorque mild-hybrid system, and the V-8 has this same fuel-efficiency-boosting tech as an option.

Ford must believe you can never have too many engine options, as the 2019 F-150 has a whopping six options. These engine range from a modest 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V-6 to a wild 510-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 that delivers a 5.1-second 0-to-60 time. There is also a diesel engine in the mix for buyers who want decent fuel economy too.
