Dodge Durango Vs. Chevy Traverse

By Justin Cupler | May 14th, 2019

SUVs and crossovers provide a great balance between sedans and minivans, giving buyers the roominess of a van, a driving style closer to a sedan, and rugged styling. The 2019 Dodge Durango and 2019 Chevy Traverse offer that and more, but which is better for you, our Saginaw are car buyers?

Exterior

The 2019 Dodge Durango’s design may be a little long in the tooth, but its classic SUV styling attracts buyers who are tired of all the swoopy crossovers on the road today. It boasts upright shoulders, a flat nose, and a relatively flat roofline. Though that may sound unentertaining on paper, it is great in person, and the Durango pushes its design to new heights in the sportier R/T and SRT models.

Like the Durango, the 2019 Chevy Traverse has a more upright stance that helps it cater to buyers who prefer the old-school SUV look. The 2019 Traverse has a little more drama than the Durango, though, with its sharper body lines, sharp nose, and its blacked-out RS trim.

In terms of size, the 2019 Chevy Traverse is larger than the Durango in most measurements, but the Dodge SUV is slightly taller and up to 1,107 pounds heavier.

Measurement 2019 Dodge Durango 2019 Chevy Traverse Difference
Length 201.2 inches 204.3 inches -3.1 inches
Width 75.8 inches 78.6 inches -2.8 inches
Height 70.9 to 71.9 inches 70.7 inches +0.2 to +1.2 inches
Wheelbase 119.8 inches 120.9 inches -1.12 inches
Ground Clearance 8.1 inches
Curb weight 4,680 to 5,510 pounds 4,362 to 4,403 pounds +318 to +1,107 pounds

Advantage: 2019 Dodge Durango

  • Classic SUV styling
  • Sporty and aggress SRT and R/T models
  • Citadel model adds a touch of luxury

Advantage: 2019 Chevy Traverse

  • Lower and easier to get in
  • Complex design
  • Larger but much lighter

Interior

Inside, the 2019 Dodge Durango takes a simpler approach in design with an upright dash that lacks much color contrast. Other than black, the only other color you’ll find on the dash to break it up is the metallic trim. This simplicity is contrasted by the standard 7-inch and optional 8.4-inch touchscreens dropped in the middle of it all. As you move through the trim levels, the Durango’s cabin gets quite luxurious with the Citadel model’s Capri leather seats and the SRT trim’s Nappa leather upholstery.

The 2019 Chevy Traverse’s cabin is more entertaining with its swoopier dash that includes a contrasting insert on higher trims. It also boasts large touchscreens — a standard 7-inch and an optional 8-inch — but they blend right in with the styling. A special touch to these touchscreens is that they slide upward to reveal a secret storage area you can lock with a PIN. Like the Durango, the Traverse gets quite luxurious at the top with perforated leather upholstery and ventilated seats.

In passenger capacity, the 2019 Traverse gets a leg up on the Durango with its standard third row — this is an option in the base Durango. The Traverse also has a pile more room in almost every measurable, making it a better option for families with older children.

Performance

The land of SUVs and crossovers has a wide range of powertrain and performance options. The 2019 Durango and 2019 Traverse are no exceptions with their range of powertrain.

The 2019 Dodge Durango boasts a standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine with 293 to 295 horsepower. Buyers who want more oomph can opt for the R/T trim with its 360-horsepower 5.7-liter V-8 or the wild SRT and its 475-horsepower 64-liter V-8 engine.

The Chevy Traverse is more traditional with its 310-horsepower 3.6-liter V-6 engine and optional 257-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter unit. The base V-6 engine in the Traverse makes it 1.1 seconds quicker to 60 mph than the base and R/T Durango models, it cannot come close to the SRT trim.
